Understanding the Circle of 5ths

April 26, 2023|Lessons

The Circle of Fifths is a fundamental tool for understanding music theory and is used by musicians and composers of all genres. It's a visual representation of the relationships between the twelve notes of the chromatic scale, and it provides a framework for understanding chord progressions, key signatures, and scales.

What is the Circle of Fifths?

The Circle of Fifths is a diagram that shows the relationship between the twelve notes of the chromatic scale, arranged in a circle. Starting with the note C, each successive note is a fifth higher than the previous one, moving clockwise around the circle. The notes that are adjacent on the circle are a fourth apart.

The outermost layer of the Circle of Fifths shows the key signatures, with the major keys in the upper half and the corresponding minor keys in the lower half. Moving clockwise around the circle, each key signature adds one sharp or removes one flat, indicating the key's tonality.

How to use the Circle of Fifths?

The Circle of Fifths is a valuable tool for musicians, as it can be used to understand chord progressions, key signatures, and scales. Here are some examples of how it can be used:

  1. Understanding chord progressions: The Circle of Fifths can help you understand chord progressions and the relationships between different chords in a key. The chords that are adjacent on the circle are related, and they are often used together in a chord progression. For example, in the key of C, the chords C, F, and G are adjacent on the Circle of Fifths and are often used together in a I-IV-V chord progression.
  2. Finding relative minor/major keys: The Circle of Fifths can also be used to find the relative minor/major keys. For example, the relative minor of C major is A minor, which is located three spaces clockwise from C on the Circle of Fifths. Similarly, the relative major of A minor is C major, which is located three spaces counterclockwise from A on the Circle of Fifths.
  3. Understanding key signatures: The Circle of Fifths can help you understand key signatures and the number of sharps or flats in a key. Moving clockwise around the circle, each key signature adds one sharp or removes one flat, indicating the key's tonality.
  4. Building scales: The Circle of Fifths can also be used to build scales. For example, to build a major scale starting on C, you can follow the circle clockwise to find the key signature (no sharps or flats), and then use the pattern of whole steps and half steps (W-W-H-W-W-W-H) to build the scale.

By learning to use the Circle of Fifths, you can deepen your understanding of music theory and improve your musicianship.
